Title
The Survivor Tree 9/11
Artist
Maria Hunt
Medium
Painting - Watercolor, Pen And Ink On Antique Pages
Description
After 9/11, the only surviving tree was discovered at Ground Zero in early October. It was removed from the rubble and taken to the the Arboretum in Brooklyn, severely damaged, with snapped roots, burned and broken branches. After recovery and rehabilitation, the tree was returned to the Memorial in 2010. The gnarled stumps had new limbs, creating a living reminder of resilience, survival and rebirth -- and, of OUR shared strength in the face of tragedy. Surrounded by 400 Swamp White Oaks, the lone Callery pear tree is the first to bloom and the last to shed its leaves every year.
Jin Lee recorded a time-lapse video showing the blooming of the delicate blossoms from the stark branches..(911 Memorial)
