Description
Between Palm Desert and Rancho Mirage, California, is this lone square mile of open, undeveloped desert. This had to be how beautiful the area was with unobstructed views of the colorful mountains. I came by at sunrise and snapped a few pictures to get a good image of the shadows in the mountains.. Then, came back at 8:30AM, set up my easel, and began sketching the beautiful mountains before me. This is the preliminary plein air sketch. After making a few changes, I'll repaint it in a larger format with the morning light. By 10AM, the lighting for this painting had changed so significantly that I put it aside and began another painting.

What a wonderful, sweeping and majestic vision Maria!!! I was actually in a part of California many years ago that this reminds me of. I don't know if it's close ... the area of Palm Springs? It is so kind,, I loved standing in the middle of this square mile of undeveloped desert, to get such a great perspective on the desert without houses to change the scene. Sadly, they have finally sold this square mile bordering Bob Hope and Gerald Ford Blvd.. This will be developed in the next few years
