If you want to know the BEST places to paint in New Mexico, it makes sense to take a Plein Air workshop from a local artist. We were guided to a lovely canyon. I found a place to paint my first picture. By the time I got set up, the morning light had changed. After lunch, I couldn't find a better composition, so I repainted the same canyon. I was amazed that the one "butte, was actually 2 and the local Chimisa, similar to brittlebush in my desert, lined the side of a second butte. The colors were so stunning. You'll see the difference when viewing Diablo Canyon in the Morning as compared to this. The shadows shift, and position of the sun illuminates that which we had not seen. Vibrant Chimisa, (Chysothamnus Nauseosus) glow between the buttes and into the canyon floor. Happily, no snakes, bugs or spiders found me while I was lost in that space where painting takes place.
