Description
My uncle was a farmer and patiently sat with me as I ruined a row of cotton before he took over the tractor controls. I loved the chance to once again get close to the beauty that farming creates. The perspective on the field of peppers next to the Salton Sea could only be achieved by painting on the slightly elevated Railroad tracks. I set up my easel and had just done the drawing of the scene on an 8x10 panel. As I was laying in my first colors, Highway Patrol pulled up and approached me regarding the danger of painting on train tracks and a woman alone in a remote area. I assured him that I could feel any approaching train and would move. I promised I'd be finished and off the tracks in less than 30 minutes. With my hands slightly shaking from the encounter, I quickly painted as Van Gogh or Sandzen might have, bold strokes of rich color, defining form with cooler, darker colors or light highlights. I snapped a quick photo, set my painting down on the gravel, folded up my easel, closed up the palette, and loaded it in the car trunk before the half-hour was up. It was my proudest moment in painting. It wasn't my own style, but had a special look, an emotional appeal. It was as if I was connected to the earth, my hand was sure of each stoke, no hesitation in color choices, no corrections at all. It was as if my hand was driven to render, with certainty and tenderness, the beauty that appeared before me. Not my regular experience, you can be assured.

Such a wonderful painting Maria, I love the simplicity of the shapes and think of you from the railroad tracks to get that perspective, which is really interesting too! Your description is great and reminds me of so many times my hand seemed to take over, very hard to explain that experience but it's really cool when it happens! l.f.pinned!

Beautiful painting of farmlands adjacent to the Salton Sea, with great colors, light and perspective. The Salton Sea and the mountains in the area are great places to go birding, which I try to visit every year or two. F/L
