In a motor tour of the Ring of Kerry in Ireland, I knew I wanted to paint a stone bridge. We were actually driving on a horse trail through the Gap of Dunloe, and I got out of the car, climbed the fence, stepped my shoeless foot in the water and snapped a picture as a reference to create this painting. Horses were coming, the driver honked, and I had to climb the fence to rejoin the drive. It was a overcast day, the heather was muted, and the color of the stones were not this red, but artist's liscense and all, I loved the contrast and thought it brought your eye back to the bridge. Think of it as iron ore leaching into the stone. These ancient bridges are so beautiful. I used this scene in my watercolor of Celtic Knots. The heather was on the hills but I kept it a quiet color.

Beautiful scene Maria!!! Love the reflections and the warm colors of the land! Lovely landscape! Ireland is one place along with Scotland that I've always wanted to visit with their lovely rolling hills and pastures. I particularly love the bridge in the center, it really makes the image.
